Update from Streetlands Ltd on the sale of The Merrywalks Centre Mon 1st May 2017

Due to the retirement of Bill Wrather, the sole shareholder of Streetlands ltd, The Merrywalks Centre and associated properties are on the market and are to be sold in due course.

Discussions have taken place with various parties most recently with Dransfield Properties who are currently developing plans for significant investment.

Streetlands Ltd are aware of the importance of their centre to the viability and attractiveness of Stroud and hope the purchaser will fully engage with all stakeholders to ensure their investment complements the many great qualities the town already has and fully contributes to and enhances its future vitality.

Streetlands Ltd are aware that a letter has been sent by Dransfield Properties Ltd to the planning department regarding certain applications in the area and referring to future investment in The Merrywalks Centre.
Streetlands Ltd have seen the letter on the planning portal but were not party to the letter before its submission.

Notwithstanding Streetlands were not party to the letter from Dransfield Properties, the contents of that letter aligns with beliefs that Streetlands Ltd have expressed to Stroud District Council’s officers and elected members over the time of their ownership of The Merrywalks Centre.

Streetlands Ltd have had a long relationship with Stroud District Council and have numerous discussions with them about initiatives and policies to support the viability of Stroud and its surrounding town Centres.
Streetlands Ltd continue to believe that, in relation to existing and any further out of town retail developments in the Stroud area, these invariably undermine the viability of the nearby towns be it  Stroud, Stonehouse, Nailsworth  or any other.

Streetlands Ltd accept that the topography of the 5 valleys area makes the provision of sites for large supermarkets difficult to deliver in a way that is not detrimental to the existing town centres. They feel that the 3 major branded supermarkets already surrounding Stroud town centre have been located as well as possible and are sufficient for the needs in the area. The previously consented scheme on the Avocet site next to Sainsbury’s is, in Streetlands’ opinion, an over provision for large stores (50,000sqft +) in the area but such a store here would be unlikely to further damage the town centres but rather cannibalize the local supermarket demand.

Streetlands Ltd feel budget supermarkets such as Aldi and Lidl are different from the larger operators and do provide another significant risk to town centres but again, given the topography of Stroud, there is little opportunity for sites for the 20,000sqft plus format in the town centres.

Streetlands Ltd wholeheartedly concur with the point made by Dransfield Properties that further sites for any form of supermarket should not be considered while the Avocet site remains undeveloped. This site as a location for a budget store would provide healthy competition for Sainsbury and those shoppers already shopping by car or catered for by existing established alternative transport options.

With regard to other retail store types  Streetlands Ltd believe, in addition to any new initiatives to be put forward by Dransfield Properties, there are sufficient sites within the town centres both already consented and readily deliverable to accommodate store formats from 5,000 to 12,000 sq ft and the Council, through its officers and elected members, should continue to seek to promote these truly sustainable locations and opportunities ahead of sites that encourage further drifting away from the established centres

Bridget's back Fri 16th Sep 2016

Time to dig out the Christmas jumpers and Mr Darcy as Bridget Jones's Baby is out at the Cinema and showing here at Merrywalks Centre.

The film is set to do well in the UK but has had a tough box office across the pond in the US. Perhaps they just don't get the humour?

The Guardian have given it 3 stars and says: "Broad gags, choice turns and some terrific slapstick involving a hospital revolving door elevate a possibly opportunistic outing into a solid and satisfying comeback".

Fabulous Fashion Show Back with a Bang Mon 5th Sep 2016

Following its success in 2015 the New Look autumn fashion show and fundraiser is back for a second year aiming to raise even more money, for the second year the charities to benefit are Macmillan and Teenage Cancer Trust

On the evening of 15th September the store in Merrywalks Shopping Centre will be open to VIP guests, with tickets costing £5, all going to the chosen charities.

Guests will be greeted with Bucks Fizz on arrival and enjoy various stalls and activities before a preview of the autumn winter women’s' and menswear (a special as Cheltenham New Look is supporting) and the teen range - 915. Once the show is over there will be a chance to shop the range.

Rebecca Keating, Stroud New Look Manager said: "This year's show is bigger and better than before so we hope to raise even more than last year. We have more models, more autumn fashions to share and lots of opportunities for people to shop the new range and perhaps spend some money on the stalls and Tombola. Last year was a huge hit so get your tickets soon as numbers are limited."

The evening is being supported by DJ Dave Sykes so it's set to be a fun evening whilst supporting two worthwhile charities. Whilst local school Eastington Primary have provided the staging and chairs.

Block Party hits Merrywalks! Wed 24th Aug 2016

After a successful year last year the Stroud Fringe is back at Merrywalks and it is bigger and better than before!

Stroud Block Party brings the spirit of New York’s five boroughs to Stroud’s Five Valleys… Started by local DJs Dubbu and Stroud Calling, the aim is to bring hip hop culture to Stroud Fringe’s already vibrant line-up.

This year’s event seeks to showcase local talent alongside some of the UK’s finest purveyors of hip hop, funk, disco and reggae.

The beats will run throughout the weekend from 7pm on Friday night, with headliners including BOCA 45 and former Portishead DJ ANDY SMITH (Friday), DJ SHEPDOG and UK hip hop originator RODNEY P (Saturday) and, fresh from her set at WOMAD, Massive Attack tour DJ and Bristol stalwart QUEEN BEE (Sunday).

And that's not all, inside the Shopping Centre you'll find a shop looking decidedly like the inside of a tennis ball:

INDEX is an artist-run organisation based in Stroud presenting and commissioning a rigorous and diverse programme of critically-engaged work including:

INDEX| magazine, INDEX|screening & INDEX|sound

The whole team at Merrywalks wishes everyone a fantstic weekend at the Fringe!

Plenty to see at the Cinema on a rainy day Mon 1st Aug 2016

The summer holiday is always a sure-fire win on family favourite blockbusters and this summer doesn't disappoint.

It isn't a case of finding Nemo this year but Dory - but don't worry Nemo is swimming along in the cast too.

Dory (Ellen DeGeneres) is a wide-eyed, blue tang fish who suffers from memory loss every 10 seconds or so. The one thing she can remember is that she somehow became separated from her parents as a child. With help from her friends Nemo and Marlin, Dory embarks on an epic adventure to find them.

If that doesn't float your boat or you want some real people along with your animation then look no further than the BFG.

And an old classic has been given a fab new life and army of new fans as The BFG has been remade for cinema. It's getting rave reviews like this one in The Guardian.

Mark Kermode said: "marvellously melancholic motion-capture performance by Mark Rylance and vibrant support from rising star Ruby Barnhill provide the beating heart of this extremely likable adaptation of Roald Dahl’s family favourite."

Want a film for a kid-free night? Then the latest Bourne instalment would be a good pick.

Oh, and don't forget the popcorn

Keep fit anytime at Merrywalks Tue 10th Nov 2015

The new state of the art health and fitness club has opened in Merrywalks. The Stroud club has had overwhelming support from the local community, with pre-memberships selling out quickly. Owner Adam Philips, a former finance professional, left the industry to focus on his keen interest in fitness, specifically triathlon, cycling and functional training. The club is managed by James Ogden, a personal trainer who is passionate about helping people lead healthier lives regardless of ability.

“We’ve been bowled over by the local support for our club,” says Adam Philips, owner, Anytime Fitness Stroud. “Although work started in earnest in June, we had commitment from the community as early as August 2014, which has been incredible. We’re honoured to be hosting the celebrations for the 3,000th club and look forward to growing and supporting the health goals of our Stroud members in the coming months.”

Speaking ahead of the opening William Wrather, owner of the Merrywalks Centre said: "We are thrilled to be welcoming Anytime Fitness to Merrywalks Centre and working with them to expand the leisure offer for Stroud." He continued "We wish them every success and are delighted that Stroud is part if the 3000 club celebrations."

The Anytime Fitness brand is celebrating its thirteenth year of operating at the same time as it opens the 100th club in Japan, as well as establishing brand new franchises in Sweden and Italy. The franchise sector now contribute £14bn to the UK economy and with a 96% success rate, it is unsurprising that Anytime Fitness was recently ranked as the #1 ‘Top Global Franchise’ by Entrepreneur Magazine.

“Our members come first: that’s why we’re open 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” says Chuck Runyon, CEO of Anytime Fitness.  “It’s this commitment to convenience and community, providing classes and virtual classes at a mid-range price – as well as the passion of our franchisees – which has made Anytime Fitness such a success. We’re delighted to celebrate the 3,000th club opening in Stroud and would like to congratulate Adam, James and all of his team on this momentous event.”

Merrywalks shopping centre has back to school covered. Thu 27th Aug 2015

Time flies over the school holidays and all too soon thoughts turn to back-to-school. Be it little children off to school for the first time, teenagers heading for secondary school or knucking down for A-levels, parents and students can find all they need under one roof at Merrywalks Shopping Centre in Stroud.

From Trutex  or New Look for uniforms and Wilko's, 99p shop or Store Twenty One for everything from lunchboxes to pencil cases and Master Cobbler for locker keys and Cherry Tree Hill or Hothouse for back packs... Merrywalks really is a one-stop shop - with the bonus of onsite parking.

We've put together her top ten tips for a stress free return to school week.

1. Feet can grow quite a bit and with the warm weather recently it's a good idea to get the shoes and trainers out and check they still fit. Shoes that still fit can always be re-heeled or waterproofed again.

2. Cookery is back on the curriculum so you'll need to think about what equipment you might need, things like large watertight plastic storage containers, some zippable food bags for all the ingredients and a cake tin might be a good start.

3. Think about a countdown calendar with the kids, starting 10 days from the first day back. Consider re-introducing earlier bed times and setting an alarm in the morning, checking what homework needed doing before the start of term, visiting the library and spending some time reading.

4. If your children are walking or cycling have you checked waterproofs, tyres and lights? Halfords will help size bikes and offer a great deal of safety equipment.

5. Most schools will have sent out guidance, or have some online for new starters - but Trutex we are always happy to help parents get ready for a new school. So they don't forget the all important book bag or the name labels.

6. If you have a new morning routine, perhaps with additional drop-off's at two schools or a child is walking to school with friends for the first time consider having a practice run, there will be less traffic but it will help you plan the first morning or give you confidence your child knows the route.

7. Sounds obvious but get ready the day before rather than in the evening only to discover you can't find a shoe or you have run out of butter and the shops are shut.

8. Maybe start the new school year by planning the week's packed lunches or getting the money ready for school dinners, don't forget infants will get free school  meals. Lots of lunchboxes and water bottles in Wilkos' and Argos ready for back to school.

9. On the day, especially if it is a first day, there are bound to be some nerves. Consider packing a special treat such as a favourite sandwich filling or giving your child a new pencil case. But chances are you are more nervous than them!

10. Leave time for the first day at school photo on the morning, it's one to send the grandparents.

Ray Ellaby, Centre Manager said: "With less than two weeks to go there is lots to do but here at Merrywalks shopping centre we are well placed to help parents tackle the back to school to do list in a stress free way, leaving them to enjoy as much of the sunshine as they can."

Stroud Fringe comes to Merrywalks Thu 6th Aug 2015

Not long until the Bank Holiday is upon us and we are thrilled to be involved in the Stroud Fringe Festival this year - hosting the Block Party.

Now, you might expect the show to be in the foyer but that just won't cut it for a block party that involves a Land Rover converted into decks - it's going to be big and it might be quite loud so we've given over Bath Street service area to host the urban music extravaganza.

We'll have some of London and Bristol's best DJs and bands along with our very own home grown talent. You can check out the lineup here:

Pop-in to fashionable pop-up in Merrywalks Sun 7th Jun 2015

If you are in Stroud's Merrywalks Shopping Centre in the next few weeks you will find a new store alongside the old favourites.

The centre has welcomed Madia & Matilda, into a short-term pop-up. Madia & Matilda is sustainable fashion label, which creates unique, exclusive clothes from unappreciated garments, superfluous textiles and end-of-use rolls of fabric.

Founded by Shalize Nicholas, a graduate of Manchester Metropolitan University, the label was launched in 2013. Early on Shalize realised her passion was in giving new life to cast-off garments and rescuing unwanted textiles, for a sustainable cause from her university work.  After her graduation and a period of time working with retailers and designers, such as Mary Katrantzou, Draw in light. Shalize decided it was time to showcase her vision for a sustainable future.

Time to Lounge around in Stroud as Curio Lounge opens in Merrywalks Shopping Centre Sun 7th Dec 2014

Bristol based Loungers Group are bringing their highly-successful Lounge format to Stroud this December with the opening of the new Curio Lounge on King Street next week.

Bill Wrather, owner of the Merrywalks Centre, said: “We are delighted that Curio Lounge is coming to Merrywalks. They will provide an exciting food proposition for the Centre and will really complement our cinema and bowling outlets. The Loungers concept is clearly a successful one and we are delighted they have chosen Stroud.”

‘The Lounges’ are informal, neighbourhood food led cafe/bars open all-day everyday where families, friends, and locals can come for a coffee, a drink, or something to eat in a relaxed comfortable environment. The Lounge menu is available all-day and offers a wide range of dishes including an extensive brunch menu, a selection of proper-job burgers, a great selection of tapas & more restaurant-in-style monthly specials. There is an extensive selection of coffee/tea, cakes and pastries, smoothies and fresh juice, and a small selection of wines, draught beers & cocktails.

The interiors are comfortable, inviting, and a bit eccentric. The photos, a great majority of which feature Dave’s (co-founder) grandparents, are weird and slightly unnerving!

The Merrywalks Centre site will be swiftly followed with numerous other South West & Midlands sites in 2015.

Wish Upon a Star at Merrywalks this Christmas – and raise funds for Winston's Wish Mon 1st Dec 2014

Winston’s Wish, the leading childhood bereavement charity in the UK, is encouraging shoppers at the Merrywalks Centre to place a star on the Christmas tree in memory of a loved one who has died.

From now until Christmas, shoppers can visit the tree outside Roman & Argos and decorate a star with a Christmas wish or memory of a loved one. For many, this has become an annual tradition to visit the tree with the family.

Bill Wrather, owner of the Merrywalks Centre, said:

"Merrywalks Shopping centre is delighted to be supporting Winston's Wish again this Christmas. Christmas is such a special time but it can be a poignant time for many families as they remember loved ones too."

Stars are available this December and a suggested donation of £1 is encouraged, to be placed in the money spinner at Roman.

Shoppers are set to be put in the Christmas spirit as local school choirs will be performing at the Merrywalks Centre on Thursday 18th December to help raise funds for Winston’s Wish, who support over 30,000 bereaved children and young people per year.

Hotcha launches in Stroud Wed 25th Jun 2014

The UK’s fastest growing Chinese takeaway chain will be opening its newest store at The Merrywalks Centre in Stroud this weekend.

Hotcha, which serves up freshly made Chinese dishes for collection or delivery, was founded three years ago and there are now nine stores in the South West.

Local residents will join the Hotcha team in their celebrations with an authentic Chinese buffet to mark the occasion.

The South West based business, led by young entrepreneur, James Liang, has invested £150,000 in the new store, which has created around 10 jobs.

Hotcha offers a simple menu which has a modern take on well-known traditional Chinese dishes, and has proved particularly popular with families, young professionals and students. Stores are branded with a modern “street” image and attract custom through multiple channels including online ordering, takeaway, delivery and dine in services. The company has a policy of training its own chefs through a special academy rather than hiring experienced cooking staff. It recently added alcohol to its online and in-store offerings.

Commenting on the opening, James Liang said: “The opening of this store marks the start of an exciting summer as we look to expand our footprint of company owned stories into Cardiff and Bath. Hotcha is a fresh concept that offers people something different and we hope it will be as popular in Stroud as it has elsewhere.

“We have ambitious growth plans and recently launched a national franchise scheme which will take the brand into new regions and make Hotcha a household name throughout the UK.”

William Wrather, Owner of the Merrywalks Centre, said: “We are delighted to welcome Hotcha to Merrywalks! They have an ambition of being the UK’s first national Chinese takeaway company and it is great that Stroud is a part of that national growth strategy. They are perfectly positioned in Merrywalks to offer customers their freshly prepared meals as well as delivering directly to people’s doors. Hotcha is a fantastic addition to Merrywalks and we’re sure it will be very popular.”

Hotcha has established central systems which simplify the preparation and delivery of its menu. All core ingredients including meat, fish, marinades and sauces are freshly prepared at Hotcha’s central production facility in Bristol. Ingredients are then sent to stores every week where they are used to prepare dishes in line with the company’s high standards, house recipes and presentation styles. A central call centre has been developed to streamline ordering and payment processes, allowing stores to focus on fulfilling orders and delivering outstanding customer service.

Hotcha’s portfolio of company owned stories currently comprises Baldwin Street, Whiteladies Road, Gloucester Road, South Liberty Lane and Kingswood in Bristol, in addition to Keynsham, Yate, Swindon and now Stroud.

For updates and offers, Hotcha is asking people to like its Facebook page and follow HotchaUK on Twitter.

We've found the Best Santa in Stroud! Thu 20th Dec 2012

Stroud residents have voted unanimously to crown seventy one year old Roger Marshall from Paganhill as the ‘The Merrywalks Centre Santa Claus 2012’ in the Centre’s Best Santa in Stroud competition.

The competition, which was launched earlier this month, saw Roger as the clear favourite for the title when people were asked to enter a Stroud resident who they felt made the best Santa in town.

The entries described how Roger not only looked like Santa, but that he truly embodied his caring and sharing persona due to his support of many local charities and appears as Santa across the town for free.

Quotes from some of the entries nominating Roger are as follows:

“This man does a lot of work for charity and gives up many hours of his time, especially at this time of year. He grows his hair and beard especially for the benefit of children at this time of year, thereby being totally realistic and consistent. I could go on and on with our praise for him, but no amount of words can express how good and dedicated he is.”

“A few years back roger had both his knees replaced, but this hasn't stopped him he still puts others before himself. Roger does a lot of charity work with his Santa act (which he does not expect payment for) not just in shops but in nurseries, schools, care homes etc, people are always commenting on how amazing he looks.”

Roger’s family also nominated him :

Roger’s granddaughter, Alice Hudd, said: “When people mention him to me I am incredibly proud to call him my Gramps and I believe the residents of Stroud would be equally as proud to call him Stroud's Best Santa!”

Roger’s daughter, Tracy Payne from said: “He is kind, patient, jolly and loves seeing the children’s faces when they see him. He truly deserves to be Best Santa in Stroud.”

Bill Wrather, owner of the Merrywalks Shopping Centre, said:  "We were delighted by Roger's appearance, however he not only looks like Santa Claus but he is an outstanding individual who always puts others before himself, especially during the Christmas season. We hope he accepts this gift as a token of appreciation for being the town's best Santa and that he has a wonderful Christmas".

It is rare to find a British company that designs and manufacturers its own clothing and hope people will come and see what they have to offer. ”

Roman Originals is in the covered part of the mall opposite Master Cobbler and Select.

Douglas Paull of property consultants Alder King commented: “This letting of the former Clinton Cards unit, together with the recent lettings to The Money Shop and Everything Everywhere, brings The Merrywalks Centre to almost full occupancy.  This is a sure sign of the centre’s strong local appeal in a national market which remains challenging.”

Alder King and Johnson Fellows are joint letting agents on behalf of The Merrywalks Centre.
